The first $200 gets a modest federal credit. Every dollar after that jumps to a much richer rate, which changes the math on bunching donations into a single year.

How To Use This Calculator

Enter the annual donation amount, whether income falls in the top federal bracket, and your province's credit rate above $200.

Federal credit is 15% on the first $200 and 29%, or 33% for donors in the top bracket, on everything above that. Provincial credits stack on top using a similar two-tier structure, and vary by province, enter your own province's rate for an accurate number.

Your Inputs

Donations can be carried forward up to five years, and spouses can pool donations onto one return, both are common ways to push a combined claim past the $200 threshold faster.

Donation credits are non-refundable and generally limited to 75% of net income in a given year, with the estate able to claim more in the year of death. Donating publicly-traded securities directly, rather than cash from their sale, also eliminates the capital gains tax on the appreciation, not modeled here.
